With Father Michael Hennessy, CSP
Archbishop John Hughes (1797-1864), better known as Dagger John because of his pugnacious personality, was an Irish-born immigrant to the United States who became the Archbishop of New York. His life story is fascinating: he arrived in the United States at age 20, worked as a laborer and farmer before becoming an influential member of the American Church hierarchy, he built St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, and defended the waves of Irish immigrants arriving in the United States. Enjoy Irish tea and scones while discussing Hughes and John Loughery’s recent biography about Archbishop Hughes and reflect on the parallels between Dagger John’s church and society with our own.
